The first thing to consider is how you’ll be using your stick. Will it be for hiking or a more playful rambling style?
Should it be for hiking, your hand will slip around the stick, through a lanyard or strap to gain purchase and control as you move over hill and dale.

or
You may want a stick as a rambler. With this style, your hand will grasp the knob over the top of the stick. This stick will be a bit smaller however you can still use the hand around method.

Play with the hand around method and the hand over method. There is no right or wrong way. Perhaps you will have a stick for each mood.
Stick length is a personal choice. If you are planning to use one as a hiking walking stick then the easiest way to gauge the length is to up end a broom and walk around a yard. Measure this in cm. Remember it is always better to have a slightly longer stick as you can always trim the foot if need be. If you use collapsable hiking poles then you can also use these to get a guide of size.
Choosing a stick length for a mobility aid (short stick, Regency) is a different calculation. You can specify the length of the stick you require. Stand up as straight as you can and measure from the floor to the crease of the wrist. It is best to get help when measuring – if you do it yourself there is a tendency to lower your shoulder as you look down and your stick may then end up too short! The Order of Walkers do not trade in mobility sticks.
If the stick is a gift and you don’t know the length, look at the chart below as a guide.
- Height = Approx Stick Length
- 130 to 150 cm (4’4″ to 5’) = 105 cm Stick
- 150 to 170 cm (5’ to 5’8”) = 115 cm Stick
- 170 to 190 cm (5’8” to 6’4”) = 125 cm Stick
- 190 to 210 cm (6’4” to 7′) = 135 cm Stic
